Can the words “healthy” and “cocktail” really go together?
Well, I cannot say that a cocktail is a health drink but we can certainly make efforts to clean it up a bit and get it healthier.
One of the things we definitely want to do as we look toward delicious Summer cocktails is avoiding drinks with copious amounts of sugar and fat. Click To Tweet
Among the top classic summer, drinks are the Pina Colada, all Margarita flavors, and the always popular Daiquiri.
The problem is that a 12 ounce Pina Colada can cost you as many as 660 calories with about half of those calories coming from sugar. The Margarita is a slightly better choice with 540 calories but still does you no favors. Of course, you could choose a Daiquiri but you are looking at somewhere around 600 sugary calories. Incidentally, you are also looking at a bad hangover as all that sugar absolutely exacerbates hangover effects.
Good rules of thumb are to avoid drinks with cream, simple syrup or other added sugar. Basically, if you lean towards clean cocktails you will be much better off. Click To Tweet
So what can we have?
Not to fear, I have you covered.
Strawberry Peach Spritzers sounds like a perfect brunch cocktail to me. What The Fork Food Blog holds on to the Summer with this cocktail.
This Tropical Moscato Sangria has bunches of fruits in the form of kiwi, dragon fruit, and blackberries and it has zero added sugar. If you like something with some bubbles then you will likely really like this offering from Living Sweet Moments.
Fancy Shanty introduced me to some new mixers with her Summer Buffalo Cocktail Recipe. Now, I went to university in Buffalo so I felt as if I must try this one. I am not for sugary drinks (we know that already) so I substituted 100% cranberry juice from K.W. Knudsen.
Peach and Blueberry Wine Slushies is another treat with Moscato. Moscato is a sweet wine so you definitely can skip the sugar in this recipe from Cooking With Carlee.
So what is your favorite cocktail for the summer or for any other time of year? Please share in the comments.
Edit: Today I had the absolute pleasure of attending The Whole Purpose Event with a Purpose and I had my new favorite super easy cocktail. (Full review of the event coming soon.)
Karma Organic Tequila mixed with Solti Cold Pressed Organic Gingermade Juice. One serving is 100 calories and 1 ounce of tequila is 64 calories. I estimate it was about 1/3 of the Gingermade juice.

We have already explored a few of the ways doing projects with your kids can help them but I would love for you to share some more in the comments below.

These looks so good. I drink way too much pop and finding something tasty and not carbonated it a great alternative. These look so good
I will be very interested in your feedback.
These all look so refreshing and delicious. Pinning.
I am so pleased that you found some interesting cocktails.
Hi Dr. Elise,
All those summer drinks look tasty, but honestly I seem to have lost my taste for sweet drinks, even if they use juice. My drink of preference now, loved by my recently deceased 96 year old aunt, is vodka on the rocks with a splash of Triple Sec and 2 pieces of orange. Very satisfying and low in calories.

That sounds delicious. Thanks for sharing.
Just changed my eating habits …. no sugar, no salt … and mindful eating… these look SO yummy ….
Do let me know if you need any help.
Hi Dr. Elise,
Never stopped to think about about that sugar in these popular summer drinks. Being a guy, none of these are my style. I’m more of a double shot of tequila over crushed ice… Thanks for the expose of summer cocktails. Edward
Almost all of the drinks that you would take in shot form are definitely way healthier than some of these mixed drinks.
Wow! This looks yummy. i am always looking for low cal drinks. will definitely try these.
Thanks for sharing!
I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Me too! Let’s do it now! 🙂
I love a good cocktail … bonus it’s healthy!!
Right? I love that bonus
I love Moscato so I am going to HAVE to try some of these. Thanks!
Awesome. I am anxious to hear your feedback.
This all sounds delicious!
We need a cocktail party now.
Not sure if it’s a cocktail but pimms and lemonade is great in the summer – with lots of fruit!
Enjoy the journey!
I do not know what pimm is but I will certainly find out.
Love this post!!! I cannot wait to try these this summer!
Awesome. I cannot wait to hear feedback on them.
Yes, I’ve been onto a healthier drink from last 2 years and loved your option of Peach and Blueberry Wine Slushies! Some great options
That sounded pretty yummy to me too.
Wow! These look fantastic and great for summer. I’ll definitely want to try some of these.
I will be very curious to hear of what you enjoy most.
These look soooo yummy!! I’m always looking for low-carb and low-cal drinks! Can’t wait to try these!!
I am very excited to hear that these may be just what you were looking for.
These look amazing! I do love cocktails in the summer time especially, but so many of them are so sweet. These loos like great less sweet options!
That is exactly what I was going for. I do enjoy my cocktails but I do not want to have a sugar hangover.
I have never tried dragon fruit but it looks beautiful!
You definitely should. It is quite delicious. It is also known as pitaya.
Ah man, but what fun is a cocktail without sugar and cream 😉
These receipes look absolutely delightful, and honestly not sure where to start. Maybe the Bellini? If only making slush at home was as easy as a restaurant.
Try these and I bet you will find a favorite. Plus when you make it at home you can use all of your favorite alcohol brands.
I am working on being more mindful with my food so this is perfect. I love all the fruit inspired drinks and will be saving a few of these ideas to take with me on vacation!
Mindful eating can really be so helpful and, despite what people think, definitely includes mindful drinking.
